A teaser for a new anime film “The Mourning Children” was released earlier today. The teaser showcased the stunning visuals and the horrifying premise of the story. It’s another of those stories that hits you with existential thoughts and makes you ponder on life. (Maybe you should be grateful for what you have and be nice to each other.) Let’s take a look at the trailer:
About The Mourning Children
The full title of the film is The Mourning Children: Nagiko and the Girls Wearing Tsurubami Black. Its story takes place in Japan, during the Heian period (794 – 1185) and follows a renowned real-life author from that time, Sei Shonagon. During that time, an epidemic hit and a lot of people suffer due to that. Sei Shonagon writes a book about the crisis at that time, The Pillow Book and the story is pretty much depicted from that.
Studio Contrail is animating the film with Sunao Katabuchi as the director. He has directed many well-known anime such as Black Lagoon, Mai Mai Miracle, Princess Arete, and Meiken Lassie, including the critically acclaimed “In This Corner of the World”. He also worked with Hayao Miyazaki on the film “Kiki’s Delivery Service”. So we know this film will curve its place history. Masashi Ando is the chief animation director, Chie Urataniand is the Assistant Director, Toshiharu Mizutani is the Art Director, and Akira Senju is composing the music. All of them have some notable work done under their belts. Studio Contrail is a subsidiary of Studio MAPPA, established by Katabuchi in 2019. “The Mourning Children” is their first major work. The release date is yet to be announced.
