Re Zero -Starting Life in Another World- is back, three years after the second season ended, and it’s looking better than ever.

From Happy-Go-Lucky to Complete Horror
The first episode aired on Wednesday, October 2, as a one and a half hour special. The entire episode played out like a slice-of-life isekai, with the MC just chilling with all the waifus. There’s almost no malice or hint of evil throughout the episode. Almost all the characters from previous seasons make an appearance, except Rem—who’s still out of commission.
There’s a lot of talking—heck, the entire episode is just conversations and character interactions. Ironically, this highlights how awful Crunchyroll’s translation is. It feels like a bunch of Gen-Z kids hanging out, and while most of the characters are young, the dialogue feels out of place and tone. An interesting part is how they handled the recaps from the previous season. The newer characters get introduced by explaining themselves briefly, keeping the overwhelming exposition at bay. Subaru has become a legend now, even though he’s still just a simp.
Some memorable moments return, like Ram’s classic roasting of Subaru with her “kek” pose and Emilia & Subaru doing their morning exercises. These character quirks are fun to see when nothing too serious is happening. But, as always, the happiness turns to horror, a signature of this show. The villains are introduced, and the tone shifts seamlessly into pure madness. You can’t quite tell how or when things go wrong, but that moment is perfectly executed, reminding us how grim the story truly is.
About Re Zero Season 3
Re Zero − Starting Life in Another World is still being animated by White Fox, though the director has changed from Masaharu Watanabe to Masahiro Shinohara, with Haruka Sagawa serving as the character designer. It was first announced at AnimeJapan in March 2023 and will cover the 5th arc (and possibly step into the 6th arc, though that hasn’t been confirmed). Like season 2, season 3 will air in two cours, with each cour having 8 episodes. As mentioned before, the first episode is a 90-minute special. The second cour is set to begin airing on February 5, 2025.
Re:Zero Season 3 is being streamed on Crunchyroll and Muse Asia and the episodes will air on every Wednesday.

After Thought
Re Zero is one of those anime that reminds you that isekai shows can still be great. Just when the genre was becoming oversaturated, this bombshell dropped and brought balance to the isekai landscape. It’s a blend of grotesquery and lightheartedness. It’s great to see the show’s return after a while, and the hiatus was worth it. There’s no OP or ED in this massive episode—just 90 minutes of main content, aside from the end credits.
