This fall, we’ve got quite a variety of anime. Among them is an impressive-looking sports anime from Telecom Animation Film and TMS Entertainment: Blue Box, which blends sports and romance beautifully.

First Impressions on Blue Box
The animation and visuals blew me away right from the start with dynamic 3D camera movements panning across the gym, where students are busy practicing. The buzz of activity and noise brought the scene to life. The lighting, shadows, characters moving around, and even the sweat dripping from them set the atmosphere perfectly, enhanced by the accompanying soundtrack. This level of care for a new title was a pleasant surprise. I guess the world really is full of surprises when you aren’t expecting much, but when we expect too much, we often end up disappointed.
The anime almost feels like it’s from the 2000s, but with a modern touch. The characters and overall tone give off that vibe, but maybe that’s just me. The romance aspect is well fleshed out. The main character, Taiki, has a crush on a senior, Chinatsu, but he’s insecure about it. Taiki is in the badminton club, and Chinatsu is in the basketball club. The romance adds another layer of drama, which is entertaining to watch. They slowly grow closer as they inspire each other to improve. It’s a story about lovebirds finding a connection through sports.
The characters are likable. Both the main and supporting characters get a decent amount of care and are well-developed. The character development is solid, and their chemistry works well, leading to various dramas and even a love triangle. There’s a lot to enjoy in this anime, from what I can tell so far.

After Thought
Blue Box is a refreshing experience brought to life with great animated sequences. Not often we see romance and sports combined, rather they are in the opposite side of the spectrum. Here we see that both are used effectively. If you want something that’s away from all the weird, craziness, adsurd anime shenaniganz, then Blue Box is right for you.
