Man, it’s been long since Jujutsu Kaisen has been on screen. And every time it returns, it looks and feel different. It’s crazy that one show can be like that. Even so, it’s still Jujutsu Kaisen and it let us know through its unique and charismatic vibe.
The Plot
Some spoilers ahead so you might wanna go and watch the first episode first.
In the first scene, it shows the status quo and where this season will end up through Geto Suguru’s perspective. Then it cuts to from where this journey is about to start by following other characters: Utahime and Mei Mei who made their appearance in season 1. We get to see the troublesome trio: Gojo, Geto, & Shoko (interestingly they all have 3 syllables in their names). It was funny to see that Mei Mei told Utahime not to put up the veil then those 3 forget and get in trouble for that later. We get to see the future principal of the Jujutsu High School, Masamichi Yaga with a younger look and without shades. Gojo makes a Digimon reference to ease out the premise and there’s also Windows XP. Then it moves to the main plot which is as grim as it can be.
What’s New?
Despite some controversy, I like the artistic approach this season is taking. It doesn’t have to be on per with season 1. It’s still awesome with properly implemented storyboarding and clever camera angles. In the beginning, it felt like a horror anime because of the uncanny character movements ad camera panning. The sakuga moments look just as good as any high budget shows. It’s lighthearted and feels loose just like the characters’ mood. Gojo is on high horse more than ever and Geto’s smile feels like he’s actually having fun, and they both quick to get into fights. It’s sad that how he’s going to turn out in the end. Hopefully this will give some context on the movie and explore Geto’s character. MAPPA often fumbles the bag in that aspect. Thankfully there will be 23 episodes so that gives enough time for the story to unfold properly.
The Opening pretty much shows all the characters involving this season. It’s a fun sequence with upbeat music. The Ending brought up the fish metaphor from season 1’s Opening. It shows the mundane activities of the characters and also the thought processes of the titular characters. The preview of next episode is also interesting to watch. As always, it’s not too long, annoying, or spoiling anything. It’s in the pre-animation line art format which makes you feel like the next episode is not done yet. What can I say, Jujutsu Kaisen is too cool for our time.
