Once every year, we look back and sort through everything that happened, highlighting what stood out in a particular way. As the title suggests, this time, it’s all about the worst games of 2024—the ones everyone loves to hate.
1. Deathbound
- Developer: Trialforge Studio
- Publisher: Tate Multimedia
- Release Date: August 8, 2024
- Platform(s): PC, PS5, XB X|S
Deathbound isn’t all that bad, it’s just a bit let-down. It’s the least likable soulslike game that falls short in many aspects overall. I’d say it’s a failed attempt at making a soulslike game. The gameplay often feels sloppy and the progression system is a bit barebones. The game will lose your interest pretty quickly.
2. Open Roads
- Developer: Open Roads Team
- Publisher: Annapurna Interactive
- Release Date: March 28, 2024
- Platform(s): PC, PS4/5, XB 1/X/S, NS
Open Roads is supposed to be to a mystery filled thrilling interactive walking simulator. Only the walking part feels a bit tedious rather than intriguing unlike Gone Home or Firewatch. It has a likable artstyle and concept but feels like something is missing in this. The story gets interesting as the game progresses, too much talking & exposition that nobody cares overtakes the majority of the game, and the gameplay starts to feel tedious as well.
3. Star Wars: Outlaws
- Developer: Massive Entertainment
- Publisher: Ubisoft
- Release Date: August 30, 2024
- Platform(s): PC, PS5, XB X|S
Oh, man… Where do I even begin? Bugs, glitches, unimaginative gameplay, boring open world, god awful animation, dumb ai, uninspired designs, worst hateable characters in a video game story, aweful graphics, and so on. Aside from all that, it’s just another gaint corporate cash-grab with no effort put into the game itself. Star Wars: Outlaws reminds us that there are evil in this world that we can’t seem to escape from.
4. South Park: Snow Day
- Developer: Question
- Publisher: THQ Nordic
- Release Date: March 26, 2024
- Platform(s): PC, PS5, XB X|S, NS
South Park: Snow Day is another of those games that I wished did better. It breaks the typical South Park mold and takes things into 3D environment with all the South Park BS its known for. It has nothing much to offer other than a typical battle royal esque gameplay with some powerups, perks, and generic combat system. People who played it basically forgot this game even exists.
5. Funko Fusion
- Developer: 10:10 Games
- Publisher: 10:10 Games
- Release Date: September 13, 2024
- Platform(s): PC, PS4/5, XB X|S, NS
Here’s a game that should not even exist. On first look, it’s okay. There are some decent elements in it. But on the second look, it’s a run of the mill third person shooter. The level design is bad and the gameplay gets stale very quickly. Funko Fusion is basically just an advertizement in video game form for kids.
6. Alone In The Dark (2024)
- Developer: Pieces Interactive
- Publisher: THQ Nordic
- Release Date: 20 March, 2024
- Platform(s): PC, PS5, XB X|S
Alone In The Dark (2024) is a game that no one asked for but much needed for a 30 years+ old franchise. That said, wish this was a bit better. It’s not completely garbage like some other releases this year, but the game is a bit of a mess. The gameplay and story can get boring and often feels like a chore rather than having fun, the enemy design is lacking variation so to say, and the whole thing is unpolished. There are good aspects of it though, like the puzzles are a little fun and the sound design and music are decent. I would recommend to check it out but can’t guarently it’ll be a fun experience.
7. Skull and Bones
- Developer: Ubisoft Singapore
- Publisher: Ubisoft
- Release Date: February 16, 2024
- Platform(s): PC, PS5, XB X|S
Ah, the first AAAA game in the wold that made into this list. Skull and Bones started being dewveloped as a DLC for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag way back in 2013. Due to many dramas and all as usual, it finally released after a decade still half-baked. The game feels soulless and lifeless, and the gameplay is all about just looting and grinding. All the progressions doesn’t feel worth it considering there isn’t anything in the story to latch onto. There is a story in the game but forgettable. The bugs and glitches sure can make this a fun experience though.
8. Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League
- Developer: Rocksteady Studios
- Publisher: Warner Bros. Games
- Release Date: February 2, 2024
- Platform(s): PC, PS5, XB X|S
I don’t want to consider Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League as an Arkam game. If the companies want that otherwise, then it’s a insult to the original Arkam trilogy that defined a superhero game genre. The gameplay is very tedious where you just press one button and the game basically plays itself. The UI just takes up the entire screen with pointless information texts that no one cares about. There are many controversial elements in the game that enraged the fans. It’s a game made for the brainrot generation who doesn’t know any better.
9. Dragon Age: The Veilguard
- Developer: BioWare
- Publisher: Electronic Arts
- Release Date: October 31, 2024
- Platform(s): PC, PS5, XB X|S
WTF is this p***ce of s**t?! If I were to tell you that there is an absolute garbage pit of games then Dragon Age: The Veilguard would be it. Before the game was even released, the fans were roasting the hell out of it and the character designs. It was already failing from the basic art direction. I am not fan of the modern game graphics that looks like from 2006 but requires RTX 4080 and this game is no different. The game is full of cringe and pointless dialogue. It tries to force different propagandas down your throat and advertizes that they care about inclusivity and stuff while making abysmal characters. If I have to give an example of a shiny turd this game would be it. No one is that ugly IRL, hope they get that. The gameplay itself is not that fun either, it’s what you’d expect from an RPG.
10. Unknown 9: Awakening
- Developer: Reflector Entertainment
- Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe
- Release Date: October 18, 2024
- Platform(s): PC, PS5, XB X|S
Never heard of any Unknown games but Unknown 9: Awakening is where it’s at and it joins the fray of cringe pile. The fact that this game doesn’t even have a wikipedia page makes it truly live up to its name. The MC is too annoying to even play as and see through the story. Aside from that and several technical issues, the gameplay is ok for the most part. Other than that, it’s another Assassin’s Creed clone with the same gameplay. The story is uninspiring and boring and the dialogue is aweful. It’s a failed attempt at making a AAA game.
11. Outcast: A New Beginning
- Developer: Appeal Studios
- Publisher: THQ Nordic
- Release Date: March 15, 2024
- Platform(s): PC, PS5, XB X|S
THQ Nordic is back again, trying to revive another old franchise. Now, Outcast: A New Beginning isn’t all that bad all things considered. Aside from many technical issues, the game is just mediocre and flavourless. It’s just another formulaic open world game with generic story.
12. Jujutsu Kaisen: Cursed Clash
- Developer: Byking, Gemdrops
- Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment
- Release Date: February 2, 2024
- Platform(s): PC, PS4/5, XB 1/X/S, NS
Oh boy, we’ve been waiting for this, haven’t we? I have played its entirety and let me tell you how fun it is to roast this game to crisp. This game is like a curse itself that refuses to die, pretty faithful to the lore of JJK, I’d say. You play Jujutsu Kaisen: Cursed Clash when you lose hope in this world and you are emotionally dead inside. This game is the epitomy of lack of creativity and enjoyment, unless you are a masocist. This is the graveyard of video games where all the trash games aim for. I hope I never have to pick up this game ever again.
13. Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat
- Developer: NebulaJoy (aka YunchangGame)
- Publisher: Capcom
- Release Date: January 10, 2024
- Platform(s): Android, iOS
Here’s another sag of dissappointment after much hype and anticipation. The game was ok at first, then they started removing everything that made it fun in various patches and updates. Not to mention the gatcha aspect is really off-putting but that’s not even the bulk of the issue. The game has wierd character models that’s unsettling and the sound and music aren’t properly implemented. The gameplay starts to feel stale after a while.
14. Foamstars
- Developer: Toylogic, Square Enix LTD
- Publisher: Square Enix
- Release Date: February 6, 2024
- Platform(s): PS4/5
Who remembers Foamstars? It’ a splatton rip-off that failed and got forgotten instantly. It even tries to stylize like Persona but it lacks the substance to keep it on per with its contemporary or a decent enough game.
15. Die by the Blade
- Developer: Grindstone, Triple Hill Interactive, Toko Midori Games
- Publisher: Grindstone
- Release Date: May 16, 2024
- Platform(s): PC
As a concept, Die by the Blade is great. But it failed in terms of execution. It’s supposed to be a weapon based 1v1 fighting game with intricate mechanics. It just didn’t work out with its current mechanics. Hack, no one even known this game came out this year. There have been technical issues as well and the game got unplayable in time. RIP.
16. Graven
- Developer: Slipgate Ironworks
- Publisher: 3D Realms, 1C Company
- Release Date: January 23, 2024
- Platform(s): PC, PS5, XB X|S
Graven falls into another of the forgotten games category due to how mediocre it is. The game is halh-baked with boring design, enemies, gameplays, as well as several technical issues that plague the modern games these days.
17. Champions Tactics: Grimoria
- Developer: Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Paris
- Publisher: Ubisoft
- Release Date: October 23, 2024
- Platform(s): PC
Ubisoft tried cash grabing again, this time with an NFT game. The game feels heartless and little effort’s been put into it as usual. It’s a run of the mill strategy game that requires no thinking technically to play it. Then there’s a
18. Dustborn
- Developer: Red Thread Games
- Publisher: Quantic Dream
- Release Date: August 20, 2024
- Platform(s): PC, PS4/5, XB 1/X/S
Dustborn is undeniably the worst game of 2024—worst than everything else in this list. This game is so bad that even the voice actors starts to fall sleep while delivering their lines. This game is so bad that it makes fun of itself and the developers feel sorry for it. Not even mentally ill persons would try and play this abomination. How is this even real?! Forget all the woke propaganda it’s trying to make you gulp down, the gameplay has nothing to offer.
19. Dragon’s Dogma 2
- Developer: Capcom
- Publisher: Capcom
- Release Date: March 22, 2024
- Platform(s): PC, PS5, XB X|S
Here we are at last, ending it with Dragon’s Dogma 2. The game is fun for what it is, it’s just another RPG. But the game is not challenging at all. The enemies and combat becomes a chore rather than actual fight. The quests are uninteresting to say the least. The bugs and glitches made the game almost unplayable at some points. It’s a let down for a game that released as a sequel 12 years after the first game.
After Thought
2024 has been a historical in terms of bad video games. There’s been some delayed and canceled games as well which we’ll tackle shortly. The aforementioned games there have become a meme for what it’s worth. Mainly due to the belief system the devs tried to forcibly include or due to sheer incompetence. Regardless, we only need a handful of games to indulge in, not a bucketful to fill the library.
