About Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun
Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun (Jibaku Shōnen Hanako-kun) is a Japanese manga series written by Iro and illustrated by Aida, whose combined name is “AidaIro.” It has been serialized in Square Enix’s Monthly GFantasy magazine since 2014 and, as of December 2024, has been compiled into 23 tankōbon volumes. The anime adaptation is animated by studio Lerche and the first season aired on Winter 2020. The story follows Nene Yashiro, a first-year high school student with a passion for occult tales, who desperately wishes for a boyfriend. In an attempt to make her wish come true, she attempts to summon Hanako-san from the toilet.
Kamome Academy is known for its mysterious Seven Wonders and supernatural events. Nene, who desires a boyfriend, summons the Seventh and most famous Wonder—”Hanako-san of the Toilet”—a spirit said to haunt the school’s bathroom and grant wishes at a price. However, Nene quickly learns that “Hanako-san” is not the girl she expected, but rather a boy. Through a series of events, she becomes spiritually linked to Hanako and serves as his assistant, helping him battle evil supernatural forces and alter rumors to maintain the balance between the human and spirit worlds. As Nene continues her journey, she uncovers her own connection to the spirit world and unravels the dark secrets surrounding Hanako and his past.
