Romance anime with adult characters is pretty underrated these days when the typical romance anime focuses on young adults, teenagers, or adults that look like kids. Some broke that stereotype with Wotakoi, Net-juu no Susume and managed to write good romantic stories. The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague take a laid-back and wholesome approach to that.
The Characters
It’s about two characters newly joining as office workers for the first time, who don’t fit in society very well. That became very apparent when some other office members were also found to be not-so-normal. The main two are introverts, who get nervous but are open to anyone trying to help out and helping others. The contrast between Fuyutsuki & Himuro sets them for a great up. Himuro has icy-cold appearance yet has a warm heart. The word “Himuro” means “Ice House”. On the other hand, “Himuro” means “Winter Moon”. She has a warmer tone in her appearance but an icy, kuudere demeanor. But she is kind as she helps out Himuro to break out of nervousness which ultimately leads Himuro to fall for her. And Fuyutsuki is interested in him too as she never met anyone like him. It’s a story of two persons getting to know each other on a deeper level.
The Theme
The show is pretty laid-back and relaxing. It doesn’t force anything to move the plot forward or create awkward situations. It has some light-hearted comedy that’s great for getting some smiles. The overall theme is being wholesome.
The visual theme is pretty interesting. The background art is vibrant & colorful. It’s not too visually striking but gets the job done. Romance is all about being attracted to the opposite and that is seen in the characters as well. Himuro despite having icy attribute, is attracted to the warm tone of flowers & cats. In his nervous state, he gets stiff & doesn’t move but watching flowers helps him calm down. In the opening, every scene has a warmer tone, even when shown a rainy scene, there’s a warm feel to it. But that too has a backlash. Though he likes flowers & cats, he can’t go near them as they get frozen. He even gets scared when he hears about Okinawa, a place of summer. So, it gives the character something to overcome.
Closing Thoughts
It’s pretty rare that a romance anime put a lot of details in it. It’s not that masterful but attempts were made that make this show interesting to watch. All of the points above are from just episode 1 and the rest of the season has more things to come. I would say, give this show a watch for this season, kick back and enjoy some wholesome moments.
