About JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure (JoJo no Kimyō na Bōken) is a manga series from Japan, created by Hirohiko Araki, who serves as both writer and illustrator. The series began its run in Weekly Shōnen Jump, a shōnen manga magazine published by Shueisha, where it was serialized from 1987 until 2004. In 2005, it moved to Ultra Jump, a monthly seinen magazine. The story is structured into nine major arcs, each featuring a new protagonist who carries the nickname “JoJo.” As of December 2024, it stands as Shueisha’s longest-running manga series by volume count, with 136 collected tankōbon volumes.
A 13-episode original video animation (OVA) adapting the third arc of the manga, Stardust Crusaders, was produced by A.P.P.P. and released between 1993 and 2002. The same studio later created an animated film adaptation of the first arc, Phantom Blood, which premiered in Japanese theaters in 2007. In October 2012, animation studio David Production launched a television anime adaptation starting with Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency, which aired on Tokyo MX. By December 2022, David Production had developed five seasons comprising 190 episodes, covering up to the sixth arc of the manga, Stone Ocean. Additionally, a live-action film adaptation of the fourth arc, Diamond Is Unbreakable, debuted in Japan in 2017.
The world of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure mirrors reality but incorporates supernatural phenomena and abilities. Within this universe, certain individuals can manifest their inner spiritual energy as a “Stand”, while others wield “Hamon”, a breathing-based martial art that channels energy akin to sunlight. The series unfolds in distinct parts, each with standalone narratives and new characters. All protagonists are descendants of the Joestar bloodline, marked by a star-shaped birthmark on their left shoulder and names that can be shortened to “JoJo.” The first six arcs share a continuous timeline rooted in the feud between Jonathan Joestar and Dio Brando, while the final three arcs take place in an alternate continuity featuring a restructured Joestar lineage.
Part 7: Steel Ball Run, spanning Volumes 81 to 104 with a total of 95 chapters, is set in the year 1890. The story centers around a massive cross-country horse race across the United States, organized by President Funny Valentine, who offers a $50 million prize to the victor. However, behind the scenes, Valentine has a hidden agenda: he aims to collect the scattered parts of a sacred corpse during the race to fulfill his nationalistic ambitions. As the race unfolds, competitors Gyro Zeppeli and Johnny Joestar uncover the president’s true motives. The two must navigate the treacherous race route while fending off rival racers and deadly assassins hired to stop them.
