The 25th and final episode of Shangri-La Frontier Season 2 aired today and right after that, Season 3 is officially confirmed. The trailer and release date is yet to be revealed.

About Shangri-La Frontier

Shangri-La Frontier is a Japanese web novel series written by Katarina, which began serialization on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō website in May 2017. A manga adaptation, illustrated by Ryosuke Fuji, has been serialized in Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine since July 2020, with its chapters compiled into 21 tankōbon volumes as of February 2025.

The series centers around Rakuro Hizutome, a teenager who has a passion for playing “trash games”—old, glitch-ridden video games that cater to a niche audience. After mastering these challenging games, Rakuro decides to try something new and play the highly popular virtual reality game Shangri-La Frontier, a full-dive VR game with 30 million registered players. He enters the game as Sunraku, his bird-masked avatar, bringing with him all the skills and expertise he gained from playing trash games.

An anime adaptation, produced by C2C, aired from October 2023 to March 2024, with a second season running from October 2024 to March 2025. A third season has been announced.

As of September 2024, the manga had sold over 10 million copies and won the 47th Kodansha Manga Award in the shōnen category in 2023.

Set in the near future, the story takes place in a world where retro games, characterized by old display screens, have become a thing of the past, and full-dive VR games are now the norm. Within this world, “trash games” exist—unfinished, glitchy, and often flawed games that haven’t kept up with advancements in technology. Rakuro Hizutome is an expert “trash game hunter,” someone who enjoys mastering these difficult, outdated games. Known as Sunraku, he clears these games despite their glitches. After completing the challenging “Faeria Chronicle Online,” Rakuro experiences burnout. Following a recommendation from the owner of his favorite game store, RockRoll, he purchases the popular Shangri-La Frontier, a full-dive VR game with millions of players. He enters the game as Sunraku, where his trash game skills will help him navigate the game’s challenges.
