Romance centered on adult characters has carved out a niche in anime. Though many such shows aren’t all that different from the typical high school romances, Kowloon Generic Romance is leagues ahead of the rest.
A spoiler warning beforehand: This anime is best experienced blind. Being a mystery at its core, the less you know going in, the better. You can thank me later.
First Impressions on Kowloon Generic Romance

The first thing that struck me was the atmosphere. The show feels mature and grounded, building its world with subtle visual cues and character moments. Take the protagonist, Kujirai Reiko—she wakes up in her modest, slightly rundown apartment. Everything seems fine, yet something feels off. On her way to work, she removes her glasses and carries on like normal, but her slight confusion suggests that there’s more beneath the surface. As Reiko uncovers mysteries, we’re let in on more layers of the world.
It’s a Mystery!

The show excels at piquing curiosity. Even the title—Kowloon Generic Romance—is a puzzle in itself. Set in a fictional version of Hong Kong’s Kowloon Walled City, one of the most densely populated places on Earth, the anime explores nostalgia and the allure of old, simple living. That’s where the word “Generic” fits in—it’s about reliving a “generic,” idealized past.
Hovering over Kowloon is a mysterious floating object called Generic Terra, owned by the powerful Hebinuma Corporation. It’s clearly behind the strange doppelgänger phenomenon featured in the story. Clues are sprinkled everywhere—in character mannerisms, catchphrases, talk of nostalgia, and themes of identity. These all subtly hint that the Kowloon we see may be a simulated world built on the ruins of the original city. Each episode ends with a cliffhanger, often delivering shocking revelations that further unravel the mystery. Piecing the puzzle together is a thrilling experience.
It’s Romance Above All
![[AnimeKayo] Kowloon Generic Romance - Reiko x Kudou](https://animekayo.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/AnimeKayo-Kowloon-Generic-Romance_1395221-1024x788.jpg)
At its core, the romance between Reiko Kujirai and Hajime Kudou is the final piece of the puzzle. If you’re familiar with Jun Mayuzuki’s previous work, After the Rain, you’ll know she likes to layer romance with barriers—emotional, situational, or otherwise. In Kowloon Generic Romance, those barriers are even more complex. You’re left wondering: Is Kudou even into this version of Reiko? Is their chemistry real, or just a programmed illusion? Their tender moments feel genuine but are constantly interrupted by the strange world they inhabit. It raises the question—can a romance with a doppelgänger be real?
Kudou himself remains an enigma. Why would a Japanese office worker transfer to a city set for demolition? Is he connected to Generic Terra? Does he know more than he lets on? Despite the mystery, his actions feel honest, and it’s easy to root for him.
This romance stands apart because it’s handled with a level of maturity many anime fans might not be used to. No silly misunderstandings, forced ecchi gags, or characters acting beyond their age. Reiko and Kudou are both in their 30s, and their interactions feel natural and nuanced. Yes, there are spicy moments, but they’re tastefully done and surprisingly intimate.
The Art and Music
As I mentioned, the atmosphere is one of the show’s greatest strengths. The background visuals are full of life and detail, almost reminiscent of a high-end live-action drama—fitting, since a live-action adaptation is airing alongside the anime. The character designs evoke the aesthetic of ’80s and ’90s anime, and that nostalgic vibe is mirrored in both the opening and ending sequences. Studio Arvo Animation is absolutely delivering every moments.
Music is used sparingly but effectively. There’s lighthearted music for comedy, sultry tracks for intimate scenes, and suspenseful melodies for the mystery. Sometimes, there’s no music at all—just the natural buzz of Kowloon, letting the environment speak for itself.
Afterthough
We’re halfway through the Spring 2024 season, and Kowloon Generic Romance has already established itself as one of the most unique anime currently airing. It’s a romantic mystery wrapped in mature storytelling, intriguing world-building, and stunning visuals. All things considered, this is a standout title—and one I highly recommend. Don’t sleep on it.
