One of the newest big names in shounen manga, Gachiakuta, finally got an anime—and it looks awesome!
Gachiakuta First Impression
Gachiakuta, which roughly translates to “Legit Trash,” is a manga by Kei Urana that began serialization in Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine in February 2022. The anime adaptation started this season—Summer 2025—animated by Studio Bones Film.

Rather than explaining everything outright, it shows the world this story is set in. We see a society divided by class: on one side are the “Sphereites,” the wealthy elite; on the other, the “tribesfolk,” who got the short end of the stick and live in the slums. Both groups are literally divided by a giant wall. Not only do the tribesfolk live in extreme poverty, but they also live under the rule of the rich—and they’re not even allowed to touch the junk the spoiled elites throw away. It’s a classic “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” scenario, and our main character, Rudo, lives right in the middle of it.
The Presentation
The art style looks edgy, signifying the harshness and unfairness of this world, with thick line art and strong color contrast. I really liked the exaggerated clothing—think Sonic the Hedgehog-style gloves and shoes—that feels both stylish and playful. There’s exposition, but it’s paired with character development and worldbuilding. For example, when some punks mock Rudo for picking up trash and bringing it into the slum, their insults reveal details about Rudo’s past and his relationship with others. The fact that the exposition serves multiple purposes is a sign of solid storytelling.

*#~Spoiler Warning~#*
We see more of Rudo’s interaction with two other characters: Regto, his adoptive father, and Chiwa, his only childhood friend and crush. Rudo’s life isn’t happy by any means, but he gets by with the two of them as his emotional support. And then he loses both—with a twist of fate, he’s framed for murder and sentenced to death. Chiwa abandons him, and Rudo is thrown into the pit where all criminals are dumped—just like his father before him.
As everything unfolds before his eyes, Rudo swears to turn this filthy world upside down, just as his adoptive father told him with his dying breath. A world where they prosecute the innocent while the real murderer roams free, and no one questions the morality of the system—everyone just falls in line to protect their own skin. What’s truly “trash” isn’t what gets thrown out, but the people’s hearts—empty, obedient, and spineless. Just a lump of worthless flesh
What happens next? The episode ends by teasing something very interesting.

Afterthought
This is definitely one of the top Summer 2025 anime so far with its stylistic and edgy approach. Hopefully, Studio Bones Film can deliver what the manga is reputed for.

What also makes Gachiakuta stand out is its raw emotional tone and thematic depth. It explores systemic oppression, societal neglect, and what it means to be “disposable” in a rigid class structure. Rudo’s resolve is not born from revenge alone but from a burning desire for justice—for himself and others like him. The underground world he’s thrown into hints at deeper lore, strange technology, and perhaps allies who were also discarded. As the series progresses, it’s likely we’ll see themes of rebellion, identity, and moral ambiguity take center stage—making Gachiakuta more than just another edgy action anime.
