About City The Animation
CITY is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Keiichi Arawi. It began serialization in September 2016 in Kodansha‘s seinen manga magazine Morning. It has been published in 13 tankōbon volumes. In North America, the series is licensed by Vertical. An anime television series adaptation, titled City the Animation and produced by Kyoto Animation, is set to premiere in July 2025.
The story follows the Mont Blanc Trio, consisting of sophomores Midori Nagumo and Wako Izumi and freshman Ayumu Niikura, as they navigate their lives with the populace in the city called CITY. The official synopsis for it is as follows:
This town is not just any town.
There’s laughter (hahaha)
There’s love (heart-pounding♡)
There’s tears (heart-pounding💧)The unpredictable, ordinary lives of the residents!
Welcome to CITY, where excitement is chained together.
It’s basically like Keiichi Arawi‘s other acclaimed work, Nichijou but it grander scale. It involved more characters and locations and follows pretty much all walks of life in a city. The anime adapts to the sillyness of the story and translates into moving visuals that looks like literal comic book pages coming to life. It’s lighthearted, hearwarming, and wholesome yet insanly hilarious that highlights many unexpected encounters in daily lives of some people that never fails to put a smile on everyone’s faces.
In this time and age, where everyone looks for some edginess and thriller, it’s nice to have something that’s genuinely funny without using any weird fan service or anything too complicated. It doesn’t feel forced, the funnyness comes from the most mundane things happing in life and it’s pretty darn amazing. Despite being a cartoon, it feels human, grounded, and relatable. The visual is easy for the eyes, character design is cute and likable, so many easter eggs to hunt, and the music is just pure to set the heart at ease.
It might even work as a therepy to some.
In over six years, this is KyoAni’s first anime which isn’t a sequel to existing series. Which is pretty crazy to think about. Taichi Ishidate, who is known for directing Violet Evergarden is handling this project as well. KyoAni is making something really great and we can’t wait to see it fully unearthed.
