A live-action TV drama series adaptation of Fumiyo Kono’s manga “In This Corner of the World,” which boasts more than 1.2 million copies in print, will start airing in July.
The manga has also spawned an animated feature film adaptation directed by Sunao Katabuchi that was released in 2016 and has won many awards.
It centers around Suzu, who marries and moves to Kure from Eba, Hiroshima Prefecture, in the middle of the Pacific War. Her everyday life as a member of the Hojo family is detailed throughout the story.
Suzu will be portrayed by Honoka Matsumoto in the live-action drama series, while her husband, Shusaku Hojo, will be played by Tori Matsuzaka.
Kono said that after she read the script, the original creator felt sure the drama series would be a heavy-hitting masterpiece.
Other cast members include Machiko Ono, Tomorowo Taguchi and Ran Ito.
The script was written by leading screenwriter Yoshikazu Okada.
The “In This Corner of the World” drama series will premiere in the Sunday 9 p.m. drama slot on Tokyo Broadcasting System Television Inc.
