About The Rising of the Shield Hero
The Rising of the Shield Hero (Tate no Yūsha no Nariagari) is a Japanese light novel series authored by Aneko Yusagi. It began as a web novel on the user-generated fiction platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō and was later picked up by Media Factory, which released an expanded version of the story with illustrations by Seira Minami. As of June 2019, 22 volumes of the light novel have been published.
A manga adaptation by Aiya Kyū is also published by Media Factory, with 27 collected volumes (tankōbon) released as of February 2025. Both the light novel and manga have been licensed for English release by One Peace Books, starting in North America in September 2015.
The anime adaptation, produced by Kinema Citrus, aired its first season of 25 episodes from January to June 2019. A second season—co-produced with DR Movie—aired from April to June 2022, followed by a third season from October to December 2023. The fourth season is scheduled to premiere in July 2025.
The story centers on Naofumi Iwatani, a laid-back Japanese college student who, along with three other young men from alternate realities, is summoned to a fantasy world as one of the Cardinal Heroes, tasked with defending the realm from catastrophic interdimensional attacks known as Waves. Each hero is granted a unique legendary weapon: a sword, spear, bow, and for Naofumi—a shield, the only defensive tool among them.
Naofumi, unfamiliar with video games unlike the others, is quickly looked down upon and deemed the weakest. Things take a turn for the worse when the kingdom’s princess, originally his only ally, falsely accuses him of sexual assault, strips him of his resources, and leaves him abandoned and disgraced.
Outcast and bitter, Naofumi is left to survive on his own, relying only on his shield and a bit of money. He eventually purchases a demi-human slave girl named Raphtalia and later raises a bird-like creature, Filo, both of whom become trusted and powerful companions. Through their joint efforts and selfless heroics, Naofumi slowly rebuilds his reputation, earning the respect of the people and uncovering the truth behind the Waves—a threat that may endanger not just their world, but others as well.
At its core, this isn’t just a tale of vengeance or a classic hero’s journey—it’s a story of redemption, trust, and the bonds that form through hardship and perseverance.
